Today’s gospel story illustrates the overpowering effect of forgiveness. I once dreamt that this story happened in our country. The dream went like this:
One day, Pope Francis decided to visit the Philippines. Upon his arrival, Church dignitaries, government officials, and media reporters trooped to the airport to welcome him. As the Pope greeted them one by one, he paused before a politician and said: “During my entire visit, your house shall be my official residence.”
The politician’s immediate reaction was to smile as photographers rushed to take his picture. Although everyone knew him as a crook, he had never felt more handsome and popular!
However, this feeling of elation was shortlived. He was suddenly gripped by a longing, a desire for something he had never quite experienced and could not fully describe. Certainly, it was not mere guilt or feel-good remorse.
It was a longing caused by a deep sense of disappointment. As a politician who had mastered the tricks of his trade, he had become wealthy and powerful. In the eyes of people, he was a success. But such a success so greatly disappointed him now because he had thoroughtly expected it to be the crown of his life. He remembered the saying: “Nothing fails like success.”
While the Pope embraced him, he was able to name the longing or desire that gnawed at his heart. He longed for forgiveness that could change his past.
So, he knelt before the Pope and sincerely declared: “Tomorrow I promise to make a public confessions of all my crimes. Yes, I am a corrupt official and a thief. I am tired of twisting the law to evade prosecution. I have caused my fellow Filipinos enough suffering. I want to change that. I am willing to go to prison and if I have stolen anything from public coffers, I shall repay it fourfold.”
Pope Francis looked at him as if to say: “What is done cannot be undone. Yes, your past life is constricted by guilt, choked by worries and the fear that your sins and crimes would be exposed. My dear child, forgiveness cannot change your past. But it has the power to enlarge your future.”
I woke up from this dream praying, “Please Lord, let that politician fulfill his promise so he may experience a future enlarged by freedom, a clean conscience, and peace. Amen.”
One of the best feelings is knowing that you’re wanted. Knowing that someone wants to talk to you, wants to know how you’re doing, wants to se you. Whether they pick up the phone to send you a quick text or stop by your house to catch up, someone or something reminded them of you specifically. It just feels really nice to know that you’ve been on someone’s mind and that they care enough to let you know that.
- Sometimes I will just get annoyed with people randomly. Like I don’t even have a real reason to be annoyed with them but their presence just bothers me.
